2:21 Marathoner Svetlana
Zakharova chooses Frankfurt
for marathon comeback Former Boston and Chicago Marathon Champion Svetlana Zakharova has chosen the Dresdner Kleinwort Frankfurt-Marathon on 28th October for her comeback. After giving birth the 36 year-old Russian will run her first marathon since November 2005. Featuring a personal best of 2:21:31 Svetlana Zakharova is the fastest ever woman runner who has entered the Dresdner Kleinwort Frankfurt-Marathon. The race will see its 26th edition this year. One of the toughest rivals for the former Russian record holder will be Kenyan Kutol Ruth Jepkoech. She has a personal best of 2:27:22 and did come back from maternity leave as well this year.
We are thrilled that a runner of the calibre of Svetlana Zakharova has chosen the Dresdner Kleinwort Frankfurt Marathon for her comeback. This also indicates that our races international standing has further improved, said Race Director Jo Schindler, who expects a record field of more than 11,000 marathon runners on 28th October. Adding other running events a total of 17,000 athletes is expected to take part.
Svetlana Zakharova had her greatest year in 2003, when she won two of the most prestigious marathon races in the world: Boston in April and Chicago in October. The year before she had clocked her personal best of 2:21:34, when placing fourth in Chicago that time remained the Russian record for more than three years. Svetlana has an obvious goal coming to Frankfurt. She wants to break the course record , said Elite Race Director Christoph Kopp. It is another Russian, Alevtina Biktimirova (2:25:12), who holds this mark in Frankfurt since 2005.
Svetlana Zakharova is a fine championship runner as well. She had won a bronze medal in the World Championships marathon in Edmonton in 2001. She then placed ninth at these championships two years later and ninth again in the Olympic marathon in 2004, which was run in brutally hot weather conditions in Athens. In November 2005, when she ran her last marathon before giving birth, she placed fourth in the Tokyo Marathon with 2:26:55. After her daughter was born in October 2006 she resumed training in March this year. So far she has clocked around 71 minutes in a half marathon and slightly over 32 minutes for 10 km.
