The Wisconsin men and Stanford women are still atop the LetsRun.com NCAA Cross Country Polls heading into this weekend's conference action.
On the men's side, defending national champ Wisconsin was a strong #1 in the preseason and it still looks to be the Badgers NCAA title to lose. The top 5 teams have been reordered a bit on the men's side but it's still the same top 5 teams (Wisconsin, Colorado, Iona, Arkansas and Stanford) as in the preseason. Preseason #6 Texas, #8 Portland, and #10 Arizona all dropped out of the top 10. UTEP (#6 now, #16 in the preseason), after its big win over Arkansas at the Chile Pepper, Florida State (#8 now, #33 in preseason), and NC State (#10 now, #29 preseason) were the big movers on the men's side.
On the women's side, defending champ Stanford now has a stranglehold on the #1 spot. But the rest of the top 10 has seen a lot of change. Preseason #13 NC State has vaulted to #2 after its prenationals win, Arkansas has moved up to #3 after winning at Chili Pepper. Preseason #3 Duke has fallen to #9 while preseason #5 Arizona State has dropped to #12. The biggest cinderella story is #8 UC Santa Barbara which only received 4 points in the preseason voting (#46) but after winning Roy Griak and finishing 4th at PreNationals is now #8.
The LetsRun.com NCAA polls also let the viewers give their conference predictions. The Arkansas Razorbacks under John McDonnell have won a mind boggling 32 straight conference crowns (McDonnell won his first crown in 1974 and has not lost since). Heading into the Chili Pepper meet, McDonnell acted like Alabama might pose a threat to the Hogs streak this year. However, the Hogs finished 26 points ahead of Alabama at Chili Pepper and are unanimous favorites to win the SEC crown in LetsRun.com voting. If the Hogs streak comes to an end this year, then the LetsRun.com jinx truly exists.
