Lagat Set for Millrose after Birth of His Son NEW YORK (Jan.31) - With just a few days to go until the 99th Millrose Games, the athletes are beginning to arrive. Few have had a more difficult path in the last month than Bernard Lagat, the two-time Olympic medalist and American Record-holder who will return to defend his Wanamaker Mile title. Lagat and his wife, Gladys, became parents for the first time when son Miika Kimutai Lagat was born on Jan. 12. Complications arose with both mother and son, and Gladys spent the better part of two weeks in the hospital, with a second surgery required. Both are now home and doing well. "I can focus now again," said Lagat on Monday night. "I'm going to come to Millrose knowing that I am able to challenge." He will face, among others, 10,000-meter Olympic gold medalist Kenenisa Bekele, making his debut at the mile, and Rui Silva of Portugal, the 2004 Olympic bronze medalist and 2001 World Indoor Champion at 1500m. The second event of the Visa Championship Series, the 99th annual Millrose Games is set for this Friday, Feb. 3, at Madison Square Garden. Tickets are still available. Among the other athletes expected to compete Friday night, several are coming off big wins in Saturday's Reebok Boston Indoor Games: David Krummenacker, the 2003 World Indoor Champion, at 1000 meters; Chaunte Howard, 2005 World Championships silver medalist, in the high jump; Reese Hoffa in the shot put; Carmen Douma-Hussar in the mile; Terrence Trammell at 60 meters; and Me'Lisa Barber, the reigning US 100-meter champion and a native of nearby Montclair, N.J., also at 60 meters. Also heading to New York is pole-vault phenom Jenn Stuczynski, who has been tearing up the scene this winter after bursting into the spotlight a year ago when she won the 2005 US Indoor title. Last weekend, the 25-year-old won at the national Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev., where she made at attempt at Stacy Dragila's American record. Other top names on tap include 100-meter World Champion Lauryn Williams; World Champion shot putter Adam Nelson; and, in her return to competition after a year's hiatus, two-time Olympic gold medalist Gail Devers. Look for a full meet preview on Wednesday. With just a year to go before its centennial running, the 99th annual Millrose Games, the oldest continuing sporting event at Madison Square Garden, is set for Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster by phone (212-307-7171); via internet at www.ticketmaster.com; at a Ticketmaster outlet near you; or by visiting the Madison Square Garden ticket office.
