Where Your Dreams Become Reality

Quote of the Day:

"I am truely (sic) astonished that this race turned out the way it did. Often a hyped up battle between promising young americans such as webb and ritz ends with one dropping out, getting hurt or running like crap. These guys both put it all out on the track tonight and turned some heads doing it. I really hope someone taped this race and is able to share it online somehow. You don't get many opportunities to see a classic battle like this, could be a race that will be looked back on for a long time as a significant point in American distance running"

-message board poster on miler Alan Webb taking it to 10k/XC specialist Dathan Ritzenhein to win the 10k at the Payton Jordan Invite at Stanford. Webb won in 27:34, Ritz ran 27:35, and perhaps most impressively steeplechaser Anthony Famiglietti ran 27:37, showing that the 28 minute 10k isn't too difficult (sorry Wejo). Fam was way back with a mile to go but closed throughout the final mileand ran 59 on the last lap.

It's Logical to Us, Let the Track Athletes Train on Their Own as Well:
"It beats logic how marathoners can prepare on their own and still manage to fly Kenya's flag high while track athletes continue performing dismally. Foreign agents have taken charge of the marathon and things seem to be working yet with all the sponsorship at their disposal, Athletics Kenya (AK) is unable emulate the same."

Felix Limo
outsprinted Martin Lel to win an extremely exciting London Marathon as the racing turned tactical over the final miles as a pack formed with some of finest marathoners ever assembled. PreRace favorite Haile Gebrselassie faded to 9th. 3 men broke 2:07, and so did nearly a 4th, the greatest marathoner of all time, Khalid Khannouchi. "This is the most frustrated I have been in my career. I was calling this the race of the century. It's very rare to find the quality of athletes you find here. I'd focused so much on this race. I was ready for the race. I had done everything possible to make sure I competed in a race like this. I tried everything to be able to compete here, but time was against me."
-Paul Tergat on pulling out the 'race of the century' this year's Flora London Marathon. The race still features Haile Gebrselassie; 2 time world champ, Jouad Gharib; the top marathoner in the world in 2003 -04, Evans Rutto; plus defending champ Martin Lel, who is on form winning the 2006 Lisbon Half Marathon in 59:30. Boston Marathon:
Kenyans Pleased With Double Boston Wins

Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot Sets Course Record
As we predicted, Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot won the 110th Boston Marathon on Monday (in a course record by 2 seconds) to pick up $125,000. Americans Meb Keflezighi (Meb ran with the leaders the first half and was the only one with a legitimate shot at the win), Brian Sell (Sell never was with the leaders but ran a smart race to a pr), and Alan Culpepper went 3-4-5. Peter Gilmore of the US was also 7th in 2:12:45 and Clint Verran 10th, for 5 Americans in the top 10, as the Americans took advantage of the fast conditions. Ben Maiyo broke things up early as he busted the field open in the opening 10 miles. Maiyo would hang on to finish 2nd.

Rita Jeptoo pulled away from Jelena Prokopcuka over the final mile to win by 10 seconds.

"I had over-trained. I put too much pressure on myself because I wanted that gold medal too much. If I had trained 15 per cent less, I would have won. I was training like a crazy person. "The one thing you can't buy is athletes with the right commitment. They've got to feel that themselves, and at the moment they don't...You have to commit your life. You can't be out nightclubbing or messing around with PlayStations. We used to train three times a day, 200 miles a week, and it's very clear that if you have that sort of commitment - and can stay clear of injury - then you will run very fast. But you have to be prepared to commit."

World Cross Country: Say it Ain't So Kenny B!
Kenenisa Bekele Is Dominant Once Again.
The Ethiopian completed his fifth straight double at worlds and then shockingly said after the race that he's leaning towards not running world xc ever again (which we think would be a huge travesty). On day 1, American Adam Goucher impressed as he was the highest non-African male finisher on the weekend as he finished sixth in the short course. In the women's action, Gelete Burika and Tirunesh Dibaba won the short and long course for Ethiopia respectively as Australian Benita Johnson rebounded from a disappointing Commonwealth Games and was outstanding as she was fourth in both women's races and led Australia to a bronze in the women's short course.
*Day 2 Recap
Day2: 10 for 10 Kenensa
Bekele got his 10th straight world xc title as he accelerated away from his Sunday afternoon tempo run for the win. He's the best XC runner ever on the planet.
*Women's Short Course: Gelete Burika Leads Ethiopia to Win They beat Kenya by a point even though Tiunesh Dibaba dropped out

Day 1: Bekele Wins With Ease Once Again, Adam Goucher 6th in Short Course
Kenenisa Bekele was out for another jog and accelerated away from the field the final quarter miler to win with ease for his 9th straight world xc title. Adam Goucher however had an incredible run and finished 6th, only 8 seconds back of Bekele in the best finish ever by an American in the short course race (which is being discontinued this year). If you've never seen Bekele run world xc, he wins every year, every race with ease. The US men were 5th in the short course. And a miler, medalled for the first time ever in the short course which is pretty ironic as the whole point of adding the short course was to get the milers to run it. Thankfully, the abomination that is the short course will no longer exist next year..
*Women's Long Course: Tirunesh Dibaba
overtook Lornah Kiplagat over the final 300m to defend her title.
*Junior Women: Kenyan Scores a Perfect 10

"Everybody in Kenya is trying to come to America. I had no dream about coming because I knew this was impossible. It was a miracle," Kiplagat said. "That is why I take advantage of every opportunity. I came here, graduated in three years, and count myself blessed"- Richard Kiplagat who graduated from Iona in 3 years and had a 3.75 GPA

"This is not coming out of retirement, this is just me showing that if you just enjoy what you are doing and stay in there and set little goals. I do a lot of speaking, I've spoken to every group in Australia and I tell them back when I ran I set little goals and I think here I am telling these guys, but I've got to do it myself and tonight was really a chance to walk the walk"
