1 Marriage So Far

Quotes of the Day:

“Living each day to its fullest, living life to its fullest. Try to achieve the most I can with what's here before me. You never know how much time you have"
-Jason Delaney, a teammate of the 8 Wyoming XC runners who were killed by a drunk driver 4.5 years ago, on what he learned from the experience. Delaney has blossomed as a runner since the tragedy and qualified for the Olympic Trials at the Freescale Austin Marathon last month.

"We learned that life is not about the finish line; it's about the journey. We took a picture, shed a few tears, and hugged. Then we looked across the line and said, 'Let's go.' I think it touched every guy there."
-Dan Peterson, who finished his 24th Boston Marathon last April, despite having cancer. He had plans on running a 25th but unfortunately died the day this profile in the Boston Globe was published.

Ryan Hall put a halt to the Dathan Ritzenhein coronation that many expected on Sunday as Hall dominated the men's 12k race. Ritzenhein finished 4th behind Max King, the surprise performer of the meet, who was 3rd (King a Cornell grad, was the only athlete in the race not wearing long sleeves, a hat or even gloves in the single digit windchill weather pre-race profile). Jorge Torres was second (Abdi Abdirahman dropped out). Carrie Tollefson won the 4k and Kiel Uhl of Iowa State won the junior race as the high school kids got demolished by the college freshman.

Women: Stanford Stuns #1 Duke, Johanna Nilsson Gets Individual Crown

Duke was a huge favorite coming in, but Peter Tegen's Stanford squad pulled the upset. Defending champ Colorado was a surprising 2nd and Duke only 3rd as Tegen captured his 3rd national title (he won 2 at Wisconsin in the 1980s). On the individual side, Johanna Nilsson (who trains in Flagstaff) blew away the field for the win.

UNBELIEVABLE FINISH:
TERGAT OUTKICKS RAMAALA

The world record holder, Paul Tergat, and the defending champ, Hendrick Ramaala, battled it out during the final straight separated by inches. In final 10 meters, Tergat got a half foot ahead and Ramaala dove for the finish but it was a futile dive and Tergat triumphed by the smallest amount. On the women's side Jelena Prokopcuka got a narrow win over Susan Chepkemei. Chepkemei has a narrow lead until she started vomiting her fluids while running. American Meb Keflezighi was with Tergat and Ramaala until the final mile and finished 3rd while fellow American Abdi Abdirahman was 5th.

"I had over-trained. I put too much pressure on myself because I wanted that gold medal too much. If I had trained 15 per cent less, I would have won. I was training like a crazy person. There was a lack of self-confidence and a lack of maturity. An athlete does not only train with his body. He trains with his mind."

"Paul Maurer, in The Gift, not only presents an interesting and captivating story, but he explores the deeper questions of why runners run, why we compete, and what makes such a simple sport, running, so rewarding to those of us who do it. The Gift is one of the best running books I have ever read. "

2006 Greatest Race on Series Concludes With Over $1 Million in Prize Money Given Away at Hong Kong Marathon Simon Bor won the race, but more importantly he helped his Kenyan team finish 2nd in the Standard Charter Greatest Race on Earth Challenge (fastest cumulative time over 4 marathons 3.75 months apart) and pick up $275,000. The most impressive performance was Meshack Kosgei Kirwa who ran 2:18:41 to run a cumulative time of 9:13:06, over 4 of the more difficult marathons in the world (Nairobi (altitude), Singapore (heat), Mumbai (heat), and Hong Kong) which are all within 3 and 3/4 months of one another, to pick up the Standard Chartered Greatest Race on Earth Series $100,000 first prize. The unlucky loser was Emmanuel Kosgei who only finished 30 seconds total behind Kirwa over all 4 marathons combined but only picked up $20,000. The team competition payouts were better for 2nd place ($50,000 a man). Joseph Ngolepus (2:16:34, 3rd in Singapore), Benjamin Itok (2:14:20 2nd in Nairobi), Christopher Cheboiboch (3rd in Mumbai, 2:13:58), and Moses Masai will split the $400,000 first place team prize. This Greatest Race on Earth Series may go under the radar but is no joke to African runners who often don't get big appearance fees. Cheoiboch has been runner-up at the New York (2002) and Boston marathons (2002), and has won the Rock N Roll (San Diego) Marathon (2005) , as has Joseph Ngolepus (2004) , who has also won Berlin (2001) and been 3rd in London (2003).

Bob Kennedy Retires Kennedy was the best long distance track runner in America in the last 30 years and maybe the best one ever. He lost the love to compete this past fall and has called it a career, but has left his mark on a generation of distance runners.

"they sent guys like myself, Shorter, Rogers, and Salazar down to this lab in Georgia. They told us that we would get the same benefits and run the same times that we ran at only 80 miles. I personally never listened and went out and did 130-140 miles because that gave me the confidence I needed. At the end of my era, lots of these marathoners started listening to these scientists and lowered their mileage alot. US Marathoning began to turn into an all time low. But its rising now, and just like it slowly declined it will slowly increase. Don't expect an overnight change, but give it a few years."

'Suddenly I got to the age of 36, and one day I realized I can't ever run any quicker than I'm running at this moment"

Great Advice:
"I am glad that because I chose to focus on a personal goal, pursued passionately and today I bear testimony of what it can yield, even beyond my wildest expectations. I hope that this will somehow encourage someone here today as well, to pursue his dream and vision...Usually, I get quite enriched whenever I have an opportunity to positively touch the life of someone. Such opportunities to show concern enable me, and indeed all of us, to share what God has placed into our hands."

Haile Gebrselassie says work hard, be patient, and take your recovery days seriously.
Good Read.

Great Read/Advice: Such a Simple Sport:
"I train twice every day except on Sundays and on Christmas Day."

-the great Haile Gebrselassie, on his training over the holidays. He says his New Year's resolution is to win the gold medal at 10k and break the 10k world record. And Gebrselassie is still young as it is only 1996 in Ethiopia (we swear).

Great Read: "...there would be days I would run 70 km (43 miles) and then there are days I would run 20 or so. I just mentioned that figure (70) to state that there are days I would actually run up to 70 or so. The fact that I can run that much gives me confidence and makes me believe I am doing a good job."
