NCAA XCs: Women: Stanford Stuns #1 Duke, Johanna Nilsson Gets Individual Crown Duke was a huge favorite coming in, but Peter Tegen's Stanford squad pulled the upset. Defending champ Colorado was a surprising 2nd and Duke only 3rd as Tegen captured his 3rd national title (he won 2 at Wisconsin in the 1980s). On the individual side, Johanna Nilsson (who trains in Flagstaff) blew away the field for the win. *Women's Team Results *Women's Individual Results More: *Stanford Women Get 2nd Title in 3 Years gostanford.collegesports.com *Clara Horowitz, Duke's Top Runner, Leaves Terre Haute Sad www.goduke.com *CU Buffs Leave Nationals Without a National Title for the First Time Since 1999 But their women surprised with a strong 2nd palce finish. www.cubuffs.com Photos: Men's Photos from 2005 NCAA Cross Country Championships www.trackandfieldphoto.com

Tergat got a half foot ahead and Ramaala

2006 Greatest Race on Series Concludes With Over $1 Million in Prize Money Given Away at Hong Kong Marathon
Simon Bor won the race, but more importantly he helped his Kenyan team finish 2nd in the Standard Charter Greatest Race on Earth Challenge (fastest cumulative time over 4 marathons 3.75 months apart) and pick up $275,000. The most impressive performance was Meshack Kosgei Kirwa who ran 2:18:41 to run a cumulative time of 9:13:06, over 4 of the more difficult marathons in the world (Nairobi (altitude), Singapore (heat), Mumbai (heat), and Hong Kong) which are all within 3 and 3/4 months of one another, to pick up the Standard Chartered Greatest Race on Earth Series $100,000 first prize. The unlucky loser was Emmanuel Kosgei who only finished 30 seconds total behind Kirwa over all 4 marathons combined but only picked up $20,000. The team competition payouts were better for 2nd place ($50,000 a man). Joseph Ngolepus (2:16:34, 3rd in Singapore), Benjamin Itok (2:14:20 2nd in Nairobi), Christopher Cheboiboch (3rd in Mumbai, 2:13:58), and Moses Masai will split the $400,000 first place team prize. This Greatest Race on Earth Series may go under the radar but is no joke to African runners who often don't get big appearance fees. Cheoiboch has been runner-up at the New York (2002) and Boston marathons (2002), and has won the Rock N Roll (San Diego) Marathon (2005) , as has Joseph Ngolepus (2004) , who has also won Berlin (2001) and been 3rd in London (2003).

"they sent guys like myself,
Shorter, Rogers, and Salazar down to this lab in Georgia. They told us
that we would get the same benefits and run the same times that we ran
at only 80 miles. I personally never listened and went out and did
130-140 miles because that gave me the confidence I needed. At the end
of my era, lots of these marathoners started listening to these
scientists and lowered their mileage alot. US Marathoning began to turn
