Where Your Dreams Become Reality

Quote of the Day:
"Was yesterday's announcement (of the Marathon Majors) the first step in a long process of raising the sport's profile in the public's consciousness? Time will ultimately tell. But at the very least, we're pleased to see action, any action. Certainly more of the same inaction that we've been getting would result in the continued downward spiral of distance running as a professional sport in the public's consciousness."

Sad Day: Midland Run Closes Shop Sports Illustrated called this race in 1980, "the most impressive field of runners ever assembled for a road race". It also was the USATF 10 mile champ for much of the 1990s. It was in a beautiful area of New Jersey as well. It looks likes the organizers got in over their heads trying to market a new marathon and decided to close everything.

Women: Stanford Stuns #1 Duke, Johanna Nilsson Gets Individual Crown

Duke was a huge favorite coming in, but Peter Tegen's Stanford squad pulled the upset. Defending champ Colorado was a surprising 2nd and Duke only 3rd as Tegen captured his 3rd national title (he won 2 at Wisconsin in the 1980s). TERGAT OUTKICKS RAMAALA

The world record holder, Paul Tergat, and the defending champ, Hendrick Ramaala, battled it out during the final straight separated by inches. In final 10 meters, Tergat got a half foot ahead and Ramaala dove for the finish but it was a futile dive and Tergat triumphed by the smallest amount. On the women's side Jelena Prokopcuka got a narrow win over Susan Chepkemei. Chepkemei has a narrow lead until she started vomiting her fluids while running.
