Seven Olympians in Healthy Kidney 10k

Led by Commonwealth Games 5000m silver medalist, Craig Mottram of Australia, the second annual Healthy Kidney 10-K in New York's Central Park on Saturday, May 20, will feature a total of seven Olympians and seven men who have broken 28 minutes for 10,000m on the track.

Race organizers, the New York Road Runners, announced today that Olympians Mohamed Amyn (MAR), Dejene Berhanu (ETH), Mark Carroll (IRL), Anthony Famiglietti (USA), John Henwood (NZL) and Viktor Röthlin (SUI) would all be on the starting line to challenge defending champion Mottram.  With the exception of Röthlin, the Swiss record holder for the marathon, all of these athletes have run sub-28 minutes for 10,000m on the track, as has Linus Maiyo (KEN), whom the Road Runners also announced would be competing.

"The addition of Mark, Anthony, and four other Olympians to the race further raises the caliber of this world-class field," said New York Road Runners President and CEO, Mary Wittenberg in a press release.  "This will be no stroll in the Park for Mottram and we are sure to witness an exhilarating finish."

Famiglietti, who lives in Manhattan and trains nearly every day in Central Park, could represent Mottram's least expected competitive threat.  The Olympic steeplechaser is coming off of an excellent 10,000m debut at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational on April 30 at Stanford University where he ran a very strong 27:37.74.  He's keen to race Mottram who had said previously that he would like to break Paul Koech's Central Park record of 28:10 set back in 1997.

"Mottram says he wants to run a 28:10 course record," commented Famiglietti.  "I'm not going to let him get it that easy.  It's my course; I run on it every day."

Mottram ran 28:28 at last year's race.

Carroll, who was sixth at last year's Healthy Kidney 10-K, is excited to return to the race.  "I am happy to be returning to compete against world-class competition on the always challenging Central Park circuit," said Carroll, 34, who lives in Providence, R.I.  "Competing in New York has always been a favorite challenge of mine and I look forward to being part of this event for the second time."

The race, which is sponsored by the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates to benefit the National Kidney Foundation, Inc., in appreciation of American medical excellence in the kidney transplant field, has a $20,000 prize money purse with $7,500 going to the winner.  The race is open to runners of all abilities, and athletes can find out more information or register for the event at http://www.nyrr.org.
