IAAF RELEASES QUARTERLY DOPING CONTROL STATISTICS 23 February 2006 Monte Carlo - A commitment to improving the quality, effectiveness and transparency of the IAAF fight against doping will highlight the 2006 year for the IAAF Medical and Anti-Doping Department said IAAF President Lamine Diack as he announced the IAAFs latest quarterly testing statistics. The IAAF conducted 300 doping control tests during the October to December 2005 quarter with 96 percent of these tests being conducted on an out-of-competition basis, said President Diack. In 2006 we will focus on ensuring that every effort is made in the fight against doping in the sport of athletics, aiming that all athletes will be able to compete on a level playing field. We must continue to implement a world leading doping control programme that conducts out-of-competition testing based on the latest available science, techniques and intelligence received, said President Diack. The IAAF is committed to providing regular information and statistics on the status of its doping control programme. The IAAF will publicly release its quarterly testing statistics as well as a final annual report of all doping control samples collected, broken down by country and athlete. In addition, any announcements regarding anti-doping rule violations are also released and maintained on the IAAF website www.iaaf.org/antidoping In order to facilitate these ambitions in 2006, the IAAF has recently expanded its Medical and Anti-Doping Department and recruited staff from some of the worlds leading National Anti-Doping Agencies to help manage the testing programme. The IAAF is one of the worlds leading International Federations in the fight against doping and intends to actively continue this leadership role. The IAAF plans to conduct in excess of 3,000 doping controls (both in-competition and out-of-competition) during the 05/06 competition year (October 05 September 06). The next major events on the IAAF calendar are the World Indoor Championships in Moscow (RUS) and the World Cross Country Championships in Fukuoka (JPN). The IAAF has been conducting a significant number of out-of-competition doping controls in the months leading up to these two important World Championships and, as with previous editions, a large number of tests will be collected during the competitions themselves.
