DE LA OSSA TO MAKE MARATHON DEBUT AT BERLIN by Bob Ramsak (c) 2006 Race Results Weekly, all rights reserved Juan
Carlos de la Ossa of Spain will make his marathon debut at the real,-
Berlin Marathon on September 24, organizers announced today. Last
week, de la Ossa, 29, took the bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the
European Championships, despite running with a minor foot injury. A
solid cross country runner, de la Ossa's credentials on the track
include personal bests of 13:09.84 over 5000 meters, 27:27.80 in the
10,000, and he's the national record holder in the 10k on the roads,
with his 27:55 performance at the BUPA Great Manchester Run in 2005. "With
Juan Carlos de la Ossa we were able to sign an athlete who has the
potential to become a world class marathon runner," said race director
Mark Milde in a press release. "On the fast course in Berlin he could
be in for a surprise at first go." De la Ossa has already set his sights on a very specific goal. "I
want to beat the time my coach ran in Berlin," he said. His coach,
Antonio Sanchez-Serrano, finished third in Berlin in 1994 with a time
of 2:09:13, at the time a Spanish record. Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie had already been previously announced. ENDS
