Tragic News: Ed Sheehan Dead at 46

May 10, 2005

Edward F. Sheehan, Jr., a 2:13:46 marathoner, died last Friday while on a training run with his wife, Naoko Ishibe.  He would have turned 47 on 18-Jun.  His death was reported in today's BOSTON GLOBE.

He lived in Silver Spring, Md., but had made his home for some time in Weymouth, Mass.  He was originally from Troy, Ala., and was the fastest-ever marathoner from that state.

Sheehan, who later became a successful coach, ran his career best time at the Rocket City Marathon in 1982.  "Besides running 2:13 himself, Ed coached the AJR in the marathon, Paul Gompers, to a 2:15 marathon," RRW subscriber Brian Cann wrote in an e-mail message.  "He coached the BAA running club for a number of years before moving to the Washington, D.C., area for his wife's job. Before he left for D.C., he provided training advice and instilled a passion for running to a high school sophomore, Franklyn Sanchez."

The last year Sheehan was widely active as a competitor was 1999.  That year he ran a 2:42:57 marathon in Virginia Beach, a respectable 32:38 10-K in Washington, D.C., and was the second master at the Old Kent River Bank Run 25-K (1:26:42).

"If there is some solace to be found in Ed's too early departure is that he died doing what he loved to do," Cann added.

A funeral mass will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church, East Weymouth, Mass., on Wed., May 11 at 9:00 o'clock, according to THE GLOBE.

NOTE: The date of birth I found for Ed was 18-Jun-1958, but THE GLOBE reported he was 47 at the time of his death.  If I have the wrong DOB, I sincerely apologize.  RRW extends its deepest condolences to Naoko, who is a lovely person --Ed.
