Day 1 Recap of the distance action of the 2005 NCAA Track and Field Championships.

Men's 800 (Top 3 and next 4 fastest. Please note the 200 and 600 splits are Hand-times the 400 split if FAT)
Heat 1 was the slowest of the 4 at 400 - 54.84. 122.0 flat at 600. The guys ran a nice negative split, but it wasn't a surprise that only the auto qualifiers advanced.

Heat 1
1 Raphael Asafo-Agyei SO Southern California 1:48.77Q 2 Jeremy Mims SR Kansas 1:48.94Q 3 Tetlo Emmen JR Santa Barbara 1:48.95Q 4 Christian Smith JR Kansas State 1:49.03 5 Duane Soloman FR Southern California 1:49.24 6 Tramell Smith JR Illinois 1:53.03

Heat 2
After an opening 200 of 25.1, Kirk, Etoot and Hicks were 1-2-3 at 400 in 53.95.  Those 3 would all automatically advance a lap later, but not before Mike Inge got involved in the mix and made things interesting.  600 was reached in 1:22.1. The NCAA indoor champ Hicks was 4th heading into the last 100, but he looked very relaxed and easily moved up to automatically advance as Etoot edged Inge for the final spot.

1 Sherridan Kirk SR Auburn 1:49.33Q

Heat 3
Prince Mumba of Oral Roberts got off to a quick start and had a 5 meter lead at 200 which was reached in 24.7.  He led at 400 in 52.60. His pace setting made this the heat to be in as six of the seven running would advance to the final, after the 600 split was hit in 120.5.

1 Dmitrijs Milkevics SO Nebraska 1:48.21Q

Heat 4
Joel Williams of Jackson St. got this heat going early with a quick 24.2 at 200 with normal front-runner Jonathan Johnson 2nd. Johnson still led at 400 in 52.33 and Johnson didn't take the lead until 600 (1:19.9). The top 3 all looked good coming down the home-stretch, very relaxed and looking over there shoulders to make sure they had it in the bag.

Women's 800 (Top 3 and next 4 fastest. Please note the 200 and 600 splits are Hand-times the 400 split if FAT.)
The women's 800 were impressive as every single heat got out sub 29 for the first 200 and the slowest of the 400 splits was 61.92.  As a result, the slowest time qualifier was 2:06.30.

Heat 1 -Blake led the first lap but would die after opening it up sub 28 and then 60.76.  600 was reached in 1:34.0.

Heat 4 - 27.8, 59.58 and 1:31.1 were the opening splits here. The top 3 of Roman-DelValle, Lemiesz and Offor of Stanford were way clear of the field at 700, but Offor would rig up badly in the last 30 and lose out.

  1 Lysaira Roman-DelValle SR Kansas State 2:04.85Q

Women's Steeple (Top 5 and next 4 advance)
Nearly perfect weather as the temperature is about 62 and there is 0-5 mph of wind.

Heat 1
After the first 200 meters, Colorado's Natalie Florence got the pace going fast and led up until two laps to go. At that point, OSU's Barbora Kuncova who had been in 2nd most of the race, took the lead and she led until the end when Victoria Mitchell moved up to get the meaningless win.
Splits 44 ish to finish and then 80ish (2:04), 80.90 (3:24.20), 81.35 (4:45.55) Florence in lead, 8 in top pack, 81.85 (607.40),  82.11 (7:29.51) - 6 in lead pack, 81.62 (8:51.13), 75.53 (10:06.7 ht).

Heat 2-
In contrast to heat 1 which featured a slow opening 200 and then fast opening laps, this heat had a quick opening 200 and then a few slow laps. However, the pace quickened and the time with a lap to go was almost identical to that of heat 1.  Three girls were clear heading over the last water jump but the 5th and 6th placers were fast approaching 4th and all 3 of them ended up running up to the top 3 as 6 crossed the line nearly together in what ended up just being a hilarious finish as all 6 would advance.

Splits: 41.25 to finish and then  80.83 (2:01.48),  83:43 (3:24.91), 83.62 (4:48.53), 82.15 (6:10.68) King leads but it's tightly bunched with only 3 real stragglers. 81.20, (7:31.88) - 6 in top group with Crombie of Providence in 6th. 78.88 (8:50.76), 77.48 10:08.3 ht.

Men's Steeple (Top 5 and next 4 advance)

Heat 1
Ben Bruce put on a show in the first heat of the steeple. He led virtually the entire race at a fast pace (They hit 4:30.2 for 1600 and Mutai of Oklahoma State took the lead for less than 200 midway through). Bruce looked in control throughout - until the last water jump that is.  Bruce slipped on it and fell head first into the pit as 5 guys passed him. Amazingly, Bruce rolled a sideways somersault, quickly got up and sprinted into the top 5 to advance. We hope someone has a video of this as it was great!!

Splits:
36.50 to finish, and then 36.5067.24 (1:43.74), 67.32 (2:51.06) - 5 guys have been dropped 9 holding on to lead pack, 68.46 (3:59.52) Mutai to lead, 69.24 (5:08.76) Bruce to lead, 6 in lead group, 70.73 (6:19.49), 70.05 (7:29.54) 64.50 (8:34.1).

Men's 5k (Top 6 and next 4 advance)
The race started very slow and as a result the finish made things worth watching which was nice because it was late and raining - not fun for spectators. The finish was dramatic as after an opening 1600 of 4:59 (and the weather was nearly ideal) it was clear no one was making it on time.  With 80 to go, the defending champ Robert Cheseret wasn't in the top 6 but he was just saving as much energy as possible but he did cut it kind of close. The race was so slow that freshman Shadrack Songok of Texas A&M Corpus-Christi made the final after falling 20-30 meters back in the middle of the race when he had a problem with his spike. His coach also told us Songok has only run 7 times since either May 1st (it may have been April 1st) due to a stress fracture.

Splits: 71.04, 2:25.79, 3:04.15 at 1k, 3:42-3 at 1200, 4:59.78 at 1600, 6:11.76 at 2k with Vaughn in the lead, 7:18.9 (67.2) with Cheseret in last, 8:26.5, (67.6), 9:00.66 at 3k and the first guy is dropped, 9:35.2 (68.7) then 10:10 with 1600 to go, 10:43.6 (68.4) McDougal to lead but tightly bunched, 11:47.28 (63.6) at 4k, 12:50.7 (63.7), 13:54??

Heat 2
Given how slow heat 1 was, heat 2 became a race of "beat 3 people and advance" as last place in this heat beat everyone in heat 1.  With 3 laps to go Matt Tegenkamp of Wisconsin took the lead and no one went with him initially as the people in the front realized they'd all advance. We messed up the splits late in the race as we were watching Nick Willis of New Zealand (who we've been salivating over at NCAA meets since his freshmen year when we said there was no way he'd lose the 1500 final ((but he got tripped and lost)) toy with the field.  With 600 to go, he threw in a 59.2 to go from 10th to first and then topped it off with a 29.6 to win the heat. It was almost as if he was so bored, he had no other choice but to run fast as for most of the race he seemed content to run in last. We refuse to say  he'll win the final however as it is loaded and the LetsRun.com jinx lives.
