$21 Million in Prize Money Awarded at Track Events in 2004
(c) 2005 Race Results Weekly, all rights reserved
March 31, 2005

The Track Profile Report released the results of its annual prize money survey and found that $21 million had been paid to track athletes in 2004 competing in stadium events.

"2004's total figures are roughly on par with 2003's overall totals," said editor Bob Ramsak, who is also the assistant editor of Race Results Weekly.  Although the total was down from $26.1 million in 2003, it should be noted that the main difference was the IAAF World Championships in Athletics were held in 2003 and prize money is paid at that event.  The Olympic Games, the key athletics meeting of 2004, does not offer prize money.  Ramsak also pointed out that in preparation for the Olympic Games, athletes chose to compete less, depressing their prize money earnings.

Olympic triple jump champion Christian Olsson of Sweden and Bahamian Tonique Williams-Darling, the Olympic 400 meter champion, who shared the one million dollar TDK Golden League Jackpot after winning their respective events at each of the six Golden League competitions, topped the men's and women's tallies. The 25-year-old Olsson's winnings totaled at least $644,660, while those of Williams-Darling reached $571,950 in prize money earnings.

Ramsak said that these totals did not include appearance fees, endorsements, the prize money paid in road racing, or any federation bonuses or support, all of which are  substantial sources of athlete income.  Prize money data was received directly from event organizers and media liaisons and athlete representatives. Publicly available performance incentive bonuses, meet, world and other record bonuses are also included if reported.
