American Junior 10k Records Fall!!!Galen Rupp lived up
to the huge pre-meet hype (as he
powered past Rudy Chapa's 29-year old American
junior record of 28:32 with a 28:15.51 clocking
in Eugene. Rupp was brilliant as he
ran the last 8 laps all by himself and had the
fans in Eugene on their feet. Meanwhile, across
the country, with absolute zero advance publicity
fanfare during the
race (it was only announced afterwards) Harvard
Scherf broke Mary Shea's almost 26-year old
record of 32.52.5 with a 32:51.20 clocking at
the Heps meet (Ivy League) in a race
won by Columbia's Caroline Bierbaum in an Ivy
record of 32:44.51. The women's 10k at the Heps
was fast as the top 7 all hit the NCAA provisional
about both on our world famous message board.
Recap or Oregon Twilight Meet This
is a good article as it recaps all the action
including Dathan Ritzenhein beating Jorge Torres
at 5k (13:22 vs. 13:30) but missing the world
championship standard of 13:21.5 and Tommy Skipper
vaulting 17 feet after surgery. The only
thing it doesn't mention is Shayne Culpepper
beat Lauren Fleshman at 3k (8:54 vs.
9:00) as Caitlin Chock only ran a 9:56 3k but did run the 1500 right before.

Gets Silver in Marathon, Leader Attacked by Deranged Spectator
Keflezighi's silver medal was a
surprise in the marathon (first American medal in this event since
1976), but not the biggest surprise in the race, as the leader of the
race, Brazilian Vanderlei de

"What Roger Bannister did is the single greatest athletic achievement

I say this about Bannister because of the spirit of optimism that it
gave to people. The thing about running is everyone can run, and in
every country of the world, people do run. That is an international
event and for many many years people said the 4 minute mile was
undoable. It's like when you land a guy on the moon - you land a lot of

big deal. ...Again I think running and jumping is what everyone in the
world has in common."
