Quote of the Day:
On the night before a race, I keep one running spike in one room and the other in another room. Then when I put them on, they're so happy to meet up with each other..."

*World Record for Dibaba, Rare Loss for Bekele

*2005 Reebok Boston Results
The Reebok Boston Indoor Games had it all Friday night with the Ethiopian distance runners creating most of the drama. Tirunesh Dibaba started things off with a stellar world record 14:32 5k, and Kenenisa Bekele, the world's greatest distance runner, in his first race since the sudden death of his fiancee, finished things with a bizarre stunning loss in a thrilling men's 3k to Alistair Cragg, formerly of Arkansas, as Bekele stopped a lap short having miscounted the laps, perhaps due to the fact that Cragg launched his kick with 500m to go. In between, Olympic 5k champ Meseret Defar just missed a 3k world record as lapped runners got in her way, Laban Rotich had a stellar kick to win the men's mile over Olympic silver medallist Bernard Lagat (Michigan's Nate Brannen just missed by a tenth of a second (in his opinion and that of the meet announcers) or just broke the 30 year old NCAA record in the mile (stat geeks), and Adam Nelson threw the shot far. Splits and photos to come later. Stories from other sources below.

Paula Radcliffe Wins Thrilling Duel Versus Susan Chepkemei
The two women battled stride for stride over the final miles neither able to put more than a meter on the other. Finally, Radcliffe put in one final kick over the final quarter mile to pull away and get the victory and show she is still the top marathoner in the world, despite her Athens misfortune, in the most dramatic women's finish ever at NY. Athens bronze medallist, American Deena Drossin dropped out and world XC champ Benita Johnson only ran 2:38:03 in her debut. Meb Gets Silver in Marathon, Leader Attacked by Deranged Spectator American Meb Keflezighi's silver medal was a surprise in the marathon (first American medal in this event since 1976), but not the biggest surprise in the race, as the leader of the race, Brazilian Vanderlei de Lima, was attacked by a deranged Irish fan near the 23 mile mark. de Lima would gamely hold on for the bronze medal despite losing valuable time, not to mention his rhythm. Italian Stefano Baldini got the gold. America was the only country to leave with more than one medal in the Olympic marathon after Deena Kastor's bronze in the women's race. Briton's Jon Brown was 4th for the 2nd straight Olympics.

ING NYC Marathon Men:
Ramaala Finally Gets It Right, Meb 2nd

Hendrick Ramaala of S. Africa is a tremendous half marathoner but had never put it together in a full marathon. As he said, "I am notorious for being a bad marathoner." On Sunday, that changed, as he held on to win the ING NYC marathon despite being dazed at the finish, while American Meb Keflezighi wrapped up an incredible 2004 with a second place finish, just 2 and a half months after his Athens silver medal. LetsRun.com Book Reviews 2 Good Reads on Milers 50 years apart:
Sub 4:00 and The Perfect Mile

Read the review of story on Alan Webb's (and Nate Brannen's) first brush with adversity. Plus, read about 3 great milers trying to be the first under 4 minutes 50 years ago.

More isn't always better:
"I had over-trained. I put too much pressure on myself because I wanted that gold medal too much. If I had trained 15 per cent less, I would have won. I was training like a crazy person. There was a lack of self-confidence and a lack of maturity. An athlete does not only train with his body. He trains with his mind."

-Hicham El Guerrouj on why he didn't win Olympic gold in 2000

Must Read(s):
"I think that the sports in which you read about doping tend to be the cleaner sports. I mean, I think if you put Major League Baseball players and NFL players through lie detector tests [about whether they use performance- enhancing drugs], fully 50 percent would fail..I did this bike race, 75 hours. But I didn't feel any sense of achievement. I found it depressing. Because, to me, athletic endeavors should be one of the most pure of endeavors. Why else do it? It's a sense of testing yourself."

-author Stuart Stevens, who for 8 months got on just about every performance enhancing drug imaginable to see how it would affect him, and wrote about the ordeal for Outside Magazine. The results were simply amazing as he put on 14 pounds without lifting a weight, had increased endurance, better vision, and less soreness. The quote above is from a Newsday piece where Stevens says the ordeal left him more ardently opposed to drugs in sports. The entire article from Outside Magazine where Stevens recaps his experience is a must read and is now available in its entirety on line and can be found here.
