OLYMPIC RUNNERS TIM BROE, BOB KENNEDY AND TODD WILLIAMS LEAD MARCH 20 TRAINING RUN FOR LOCAL ATHLETES
Press Release

PHILADELPHIA (March 8, 2005) -- Local runners will have a chance to train alongside some of the sport's best, and test run a new local trail, when Olympic runners Tim Broe, Bob Kennedy and Todd Williams lead a training run on the new Schuylkill River trail at 7:30 am on Sunday, March 20.  The run is sponsored by the Haddonfield Running Company (HRC), a specialty running store in Haddonfield, NJ, and hosted by the Schuylkill River Development Corporation (SRDC).

Broe (2004 Olympic Games 5,000 meters), Kennedy (1992 and 1996 Olympic Games 5,000 meters) and Williams (1992 and 1996 Olympic Games 10,000 meters) will step off with runners at 7:30 am on the out-and-back course, which begins near 25th and Locust streets in Center City, Philadelphia, on the SRDC's new Schuylkill River trail.  The training course will follow the 1.2-mile Schuylkill Trail to the

Philadelphia Museum of Art, then another approximately 4 miles along Kelly Drive to the Falls Bridge, before turning back.  However, because it is an out-and-back route, participants will have the chance to cut the maximum 10.5-mile training run shorter at a distance that suits them and their training schedule.  Water stops will be located along the route, and breakfast, hosted by the SRDC, will greet runners at the finish.

"The three Olympic runners will choose different paces and distances, to allow runners at all levels to participate," said Joe Puleo, owner of the Haddonfield Running Company, and organizer of the training run.  "It's not every day you can train with an Olympian," Puleo said.  "On Sunday, March 20, local runners get that chance."

"We are delighted that the new Schuylkill River trail will be the step-off point for this exciting run, and to introduce the new trail to a large group of dedicated runners in the area," said Joseph Syrnick, CEO of the Schuylkill River Development Corporation.  "We'll be looking for feedback from the local runners as we develop plans to expand the trail from the Schuylkill River to the Delaware River over the next several years."

The star athletes are in town to participate in the 24th Annual Bancroft NeuroHealth 5K Race and Fun Walk, which takes place in Haddonfield the previous day, at 9:00 am on Saturday, March 19.  The HRC is a sponsor of the race, as well as a free running clinic, 7:00 pm, Friday, March 18 at Bancroft's Cooley Hall, Hopkins Lane, Haddonfield.  Broe, Kennedy and Williams will also join an Open House event at the Haddonfield Running Company, 144 Kings Highway East, Haddonfield, from 11:00am-1:00 pm, Saturday, March 19, following the 5K Race, for a meet-and-greet, pictures and autographs.

"The Sunday training run is a new dimension to the annual race, seminar and Open House events," said Puleo.  "I think a lot of local runners will be excited about the opportunity."

Tim Broe is the 2005 USATF Winter Cross-Country Champion at 4K.  In 2004, he was the Olympic Trials 5,000m champion, and placed 11th at the 2004 Olympic Games 5,000m (13:33.06) in Athens.  He is the American 3,000m indoor record holder (7:39.23), and the 2000 NCAA steeplechase champion (the year he went undefeated in college steeplechase competition).  In 2004, Track & Field News named him #1 in the U.S. at the 5,000m distance.  Born in Peoria, Illinois, Broe lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Bob Kennedy is a two-time Olympian, having competed in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games in the 5,000m (1992:  12th in the 5000m in 13:39.72; 1996: 6th in the 5000m in 13:12.35).  He holds a long list of prestigious titles, including four-time U.S. Outdoor 5,000m Champion (1995, 1996, 1997, 2001), four-time NCAA Champion (1998 and 1992 Cross Country, 1990 1500m and 1991 Indoor Mile), and two-time U.S. Cross Country Champion (1992 and 2004).  Kennedy is the American Outdoor Track and Field Record Holder in 3,000m and 5,000m.  In 2004, Track & Field News named Kennedy #5 in the U.S. at the 5,000m and 10,000m distances.  Born in Bloomington, Indiana, he lives in Indianapolis.

Todd Williams competed in the 10,000 meters in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games.  His accomplishments at the distance are numerous.  In addition to the Games (finished 10th in 1992; DNF in 1996), he won the Olympic Trials both years (1992: 28:19.82; 1996:  28:46.58).  Also at the distance, he won the USA Championships in 1995, and the U.S.A. 10M Road Championships in 1997.  Williams won the U.S.A. 15K Championships in 1995 (for an American record), 1996, and 1998.  He won the USA Cross Country Championships in 1991 and 1993, and the USA Cross Country Trials in 1993.  In 1997, he won the 3,000m at U.S.A. Indoor, and finished 10th in his marathon debut in Chicago (2:11:17).  Williams was born in Detroit, Michigan, and lives in Knoxville, Tennessee.
