U.S. Releases 2004 World Indoor Track and Field Team Roster

March 2, 2004

With the conclusion of weekend's U.S. Indoor Championships in the Roxbury section of Boston yesterday, USATF announced their team for the IAAF World Indoor Championships scheduled to start on Friday in Budapest, Hungary.  The top-2 finishers in each event earned a provisional berth on the team, provided they had met the IAAF-mandated qualifying mark for their events.

In the middle and long distance events, 800m/1500m women's champion Jen Toomey opted for the 800m, only, while the second and third place finishers in the 1500m, Amy Rudolph and Suzy Favor Hamilton, decided to pass on the world meet citing inadequate form.  That left the door open for fourth place finisher, Jenelle Deatherage, to compete in Budapest, her first world team.

As reported earlier today in Race Results Weekly, Luke Watson abdicated his spot on the men's 3000m team allowing Bolota Asmerom to make the trip to Hungary in his place.  Asmerom had finished third.  Charlie Gruber, who won the U.S. Cross Country title at 4 km last month, was named to the team for Budapest as the runner-up in the 1500m in Boston last Saturday.  There is no word on whether or not he will also be making the trip to Brussels in less than three weeks.  Rob Myers, the surprise winner in the 1500m, will be making the trip to Hungary.
