Men's Steeplechase at 2001 USATF Nationals

The men's steeplechase featured America's hottest runner in 2001 Tim Broe. Broe winner of the 2001 short course cross-country national championships, and  the 3k indoor title had only lost once to an American in 2001 and that was when he had a cold.  He had almost pulled off a great victory over a strong Kenyan contingent at the Steamboat Classic 4 mile, but confusion as to which side of the chute may have cost him the win.

Nonetheless, he looked impressive in Eugene and pulled away from the field and appeared to have his first outdoor title in hand heading over the final barrier when a gasp came from the crowd. Broe had clipped the final barrier and was rolling on the track. He managed to get up and finish in 3rd place to secure a trip to Edmonton as Tom Chorny took the win.
