Men's 1500m at 2001 USATF Nationals: Downin Surprises The men's 1500m featured high school star Alan Webb of Reston, Virginia, 2001 NCAA Champ Brian Berryhill, and 2000 Olympians from Stanford Gabe Jennings and Michael Stember. But in the end, the surprise winner was Andy Downin. Joining him in Edmonton (all three runners need to achieve the qualifying time of 3:36. 2 for 1500m) will be Seneca Lassiter, the former Arkansas great, and Paul McMullen, one of America's best milers in the late 90s who had struggled since a lawn mower incident cut off one of his big toes. Downin a graduate of Georgetown was a 4 time all-American in cross-country and has raced well in the past when it counts. 6th at both the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Trials he had never previously challenged for a national title.
